From: County Constabulary Office, Cambridge, 28th September 1901 Important Remanded here until Saturday next 5th Oct. charged with stealing a bicycle (not recovered) from outside a Public House at Harston near Cambridge at 6:30pm, 18th inst., James Smith (alias), John Smith and William O’Neill, age 64 years, height 5ft 5inch, fresh complexion, grey eyes, grey hair, fortnight’s growth of grey beard, prop. build, oval face, scar under left eye and on second finger on left hand. Dressed in dark coat and vest, grey check trousers, black cap, lace-up boots much worn. An Irishman, states is a cycle fitter, is addicted to drink, supposed previously convicted. Had £6 10s 0d in his possession when arrested, doubtless proceeds of stolen bicycle. Description of Bicycle Gent’s safety bicycle, maker’s name Kingsland Cycle Co. on front, pneumatic tyres, old Dunlop front wheel, new Waverley tyre back wheel, 26-inch frame, 80 gear, flat handle bars, cork handles, black tips, rat trap pedals with toe clips, mud guard front wheel, tangent spokes, Brookes Bro. saddle stamped underneath with owner’s name and address, “H. Hand, 169 Mill Road, Cambridge”, tool bag with tools and mending material, lamp with “M. J.” on glass, spring broken, tied with tape. Value £8. The bicycle was stolen at 6:30pm 18th inst. and Prisoner was apprehended at Ampthill, Beds. on 23rd, therefore [it] has been disposed of somewhere between those dates. Kindly cause every possible inquiry to be made at all Pawn and Cycle Shops and all likely places where it could be sold, also at Public Houses to see if such a person has lodged, and any information obtained communicable with me.
