PC Smith was tasked with a special duty to make enquiries in Takeley, in company with PS Taylor of Essex Police, to trace a George Fuller of Bishops Stortford for deserting his wife and children – without success.

It appears that PC Smith arrested a man who was charged with stealing in Hadham Road Bishops Stortford although much of the entry has not survived Ed.

PC Smith was tasked with performing unspecified Special Duty at the Rye House, travelling there by train. From numerous advertisements for cheap train fares published in newspapers on the 5th June 1881, throughout London and the southeast, it would appear that the house and gardens were opened to the public requiring a Police presence Ed.

PC Smith was tasked with distributing Bills of Weights And Measures around Bishops Stortford. (At this time there were no such thing as Trading Standard Officers and one of the responsibilities of the Police was to check traders who used measuring devices such as scales to make sure they were accurate Ed).

PC Smith, with colleagues, was involved in Weights and Measures testing in Bishops Stortford over the next few days. (There were no Trading Standards Officers at this time and the responsibility for the checking for accuracy of the local traders scales etc lay with the Police Ed).
