PC Smith listed everything that he found in the box. Mrs Bush stated that her children had brought the items home on different occasions. PC Smith took the items and showed them to Mr Crisp who identified them as being his property however, he declined to support a prosecution.

PC Smith was on duty in North Street Bishops Stortford when he apprehended Charles Kelgour, a tramp, for begging alms. The following day he attended the Corn Exchange Bishops Stortford for the Petty Sessions and before Magistrate Reverend F Vander-Meulen the case against Kelgour was heard. He was sentenced to 14 days in Cambridge Prison.

PC Smith attended before the Reverend F Vander-Meulen Magistrate with George Fuller of Bishops Stortford charged with deserting his wife and children. He was committed to Cambridge Prison for 14 days hard labour.
