Copy of route form. From Staffordhsire Constabulary, Lichfield, 31st July. In custody and remanded until 6th August 1902, James Walker alias Charles Laughton, Walter Smith & Charlie Smith, charged on suspicion of stealing keys. Last place of abode unknown, occupation barker labourer or painter, age 51 (looks younger), height 5ft 6½ins without shoes, complexion fresh, light brown hair, sandy moustache, eyes grey, build proportionate, bald top of head, large burn mark back left arm. Dress, brown pepper & salt cap, long navy blue coat, trousers 7 vest to match, black Blucher boots, & grey muffler. The above described was found loitering on a road near the city, and on being searched was found to have in his possession 8 keys (viz) - one bunch of five on a small split ring, all appear to be locker keys & four of which are numbered 6, 4, 26 & 14 & two have the name G. Davis stamped on the bow of the key (no doubt marker’s name); - 2 large box la[t]ch door keys, very rusty; - and on[e] small ordinary iron lock door key which has been filed and skeletoned ; - one pair of steel scissors about 5 ins long with nickeled handles; - one horse hair clothes brush (new); and - a Pledge ticket No. 1057. 22nd July 1902 with ‘Wm. Robt. Brooke, 34 Aston St., Birmingham’. The above described is a notorious thief and generally manages to steal from workhouses which he enters, and after staying in a short time, steals the keys, he having done so at Birmingham & Lichfield. There is no doubt but that that he has stolen the keys described from some workhouse or Public Institution.
