Copy of Route Form North Riding Lunatic Asylum Clifton, York, April 4th 1902 Sir, I hereby give you notice that a criminal patient of this Asylum escaped on <arch 24th last. Should you find such a person, you are requested to secure him and inform me, or to return him to this Asylum. Your expenses will be paid. Joseph Bell (alias) James Newton, Smart, fairly well built, dark hair turning slightly grey, small light moustache, regular features, high forehead, with scar over left eyebrow, complexion pale, height 5 ft 10 inch, eyes blue, age 56 years. Was dressed in dark blue cloth jacket & vest, reddish brown tweed trousers, light blue cotton shirt with white stripes |& turn down collar, check neckerchief, cloth cap, boots fastened with strap& buckle, light blue socks with one red ring round leg. All the clothing was marked 16.I.V.R.A but most probably these marks will have been worn out. He has lost middle finger of left hand and has been in the army. This patient was two & half years in the Three Counties Asylum, Hitchin. I am Sir Your Obedient Servant The Medical Superintendent.Police officer
