Sunday 19th January 1902 – recd. Information from Supt. Webb, County Constabulary Cambridge. A man wanted for obtaining by means of a worthless cheque on National Provincial Bank of England, Leicester, a bay horse. Enquiries made at Bps. Stortford and Sawbridgeth. with the result that Sergt. Draper found the man wanted at The White Lion P. H. Sawbridgeth. Also the horse and the cheque book referred to, in the man’s possession, cheques having been drawn as follows: Dec 17th 1901 - £17.10.0 Dec 21st 1901 – 2.0.0 Dec 27th 1901 – 2.10.0 Jan 3rd 1902 – 19.0.0 No date 1902 – 21.0.0 Jan 17th 1902 – 60.0.0 Jan 17th 1902 – 35.0.0 £157.0.0 He stated that his name is John Thomas Johnson age 38 years, that his wife Alice Ann Johnson age 37 yrs. resides at No. 6 Franklins Street, Clitheroe, Lancs., with 4 children whom he deserted last March 1901. He also states that he purchased a cheque for 1d and forged it for £10.5.0 in the name of Janice Bibby of 3 Fishers Inn Public House, Clitheroe. The Cheque Book he found at Lincoln Race Course. The Cheque Book is on the National Provincial Bank of England, Leicester. Property found in possession of the man – 1 leather purse, 1 fountain pen and filler, 2 pocket knives, 1 pipe, 1 packet of cards, cash 11/3-. He also stated that he purchased another horse about 7 mile the other side of Cambridge and left it at the Osborne P. H. at Cambridge for which he made a cheque of £60.Towns and villages
