Compensation For A Horse - Sawbridgeworth
From: Telephone message book: 11 Aug 1902 - 27...From Chief Inspector D.A.A. to Acting Superintendent Martin – Re Farey at Sawbridgeworth. This is very unsatisfactory, I have no valuation of the animal destroyed the horse should have been valued and a report made to me by telephone in order that I might communicate with the owner regarding compensation in accordance with the provisions of the Act, until this is done and it can all be done by telephone, the animal should not have been slaughtered. The accident to Sergeant Draper shows culpable carelessness and the whole affair is most unsatisfactory.
[From Lowestoft Journal 18 July 1903 – An extraordinary accident happened on Saturday last to Sergeant Draper of the Herts Constabulary stationed at Sawbridgeworth. A bullet aimed at the head of a horse suffering from Glanders rebounded onto a stone wall and then rebounded again into the calf of the Sergeant, who was standing some distance away, taking with it two inches of the cotton underclothing. Doctors were soon in attendance, and extracted the bullet. The Sergeant, though suffering some pain, is progressing satisfactory. Ed.]
