Stolen Bicycles From Stevenage And Hitchin
From: Telephone message book: 11 Aug 1902 - 27...From Deputy Chief Constable to All Stations – Stolen from White Lion Hotel Stevenage at 5.20 p.m. today a gents Singer bicycle, new tyre hind wheel, small bell left handlebar which is out of repair, white metal lamp, flat handlebars, cork handles white tips, springs of saddle broken, tool bag, value £6, the property of George Oddie, Aston Rectory, also stolen from outside a shop in High Street, Stevenage about 5.30 p.m. today a new Premier safety bicycle, nickle rims, Dunlop tyres, new candle lamp, Brooks saddle, free wheel, automatic bell which is out of repair, black enamel frame, ordinary handlebars, value unknown, supposed by three men dressed in dark clothes, wearing bowler hats, stout build, of Jewish appearance, one of whom was riding a lady’s bicycle.
Description of two bicycles stolen at Hitchin this evening. 1st Old fashioned frame, black anatomical hard saddle silver rim screw valve on one wheel the other ordinary, front cross bar has a bend in it, small plated bell, no mud guards, no brakes, rubber pedals, gear 64, Warwick tyres nearly new, value £4. 2nd Light working rims, other parts painted black, Referee lamp, black leather saddle, no mud guards, rat trap pedals with clips, small silver plated bell, Warwick tyre on front wheel plain tyre back wheel, 70 gear, value £3, property of John Moore.
