PC Smith was on duty at the Petty Sessions held in the Corn Exchange Bishops Stortford and was tasked with escorting by rail two prisoners, James Snelling and Charles Chisworth, who had been charged by PC 54 with soliciting alms in Bishops Stortford on the 21st June and committed to Cambridge Gaol for 21 days.

PC Smith was on duty in North Street Bishops Stortford when he apprehended Charles Kelgour, a tramp, for begging alms. The following day he attended the Corn Exchange Bishops Stortford for the Petty Sessions and before Magistrate Reverend F Vander-Meulen the case against Kelgour was heard. He was sentenced to 14 days in Cambridge Prison.
