Rover P6 Traffic Cars

Brian Homans

In the early 1970’s, after a brief and unsuccessful excursion with some Vauxhall Traffic Cars – the Victor fitted with the 3.3 litre Ventora engine – the force took on the Rover model P6 as its standard Traffic Car. Powered by a 3.5 litre V8 engine, the first ones had automatic transmission, but by 1972 a manual gearbox model became available and we changed to those, probably because they were £1. 3s. 11d cheaper! A comfortable and popular Traffic Car, but with a small boot. To fit warning signs and other equipment, we ran without a spare wheel. If you got a puncture, you had to radio for somebody to bring a spare out to you! The car pictured is one I used when I was stationed at the Eastern Traffic Base, Hertford.

  • Why wasn’t the ‘Continental’ kit used to mount the spare on top of the boot-lid?

  • I believe the Denovo run flat tyre was introduced for this car. I remember trying them out on Handley Page old airstrip at Radlett. I also understood that the auto boxes were ok in forward mode but didn’t stand up to excessive fast reversing to keep up with backing up traffic on motorway accidents. Manual ones were as bad at times.
