BMW Motorcycles for Traffic duties

Brian Homans

Following a long reign by Triumph and a shorter one by Norton, BMW motorcycles came on the scene and the company was eager to get them into police fleets. In 1974, we were given a demonstrator to try and I spent quite a bit of time on it. As the grin on my face shows, I enjoyed it.
The force decided to buy them and for many years to come they became the standard Traffic bike.
The second photo shows the Eastern Base Motorcycle Squad on their BMWs about 1975. PCs John Pooley, left, then Dave Curtis (I think), Alan Oldridge and, sorry, I can’t remember! I think the photo is courtesy of Herts Police Historical Society.

  • My 1st Norton was a750 commando reg MUR509L, which I shared with John Crosby. I still have a set of ignition keys for it.
