THIRTY-ONE YEARS’ PENAL SERVITUDE

John Hartley, 72 pleaded guilty to burglary and theft at Elstree on December 10th.

Mr J.H. Murphy, who was for the prosecution, said the prisoner had had a remarkable career, for he was sent to a reformatory as a lad, and out of the 39 years since 1868 he had spent 31 years in penal servitude. There was still two years’ sentence unexpired.

Prisoner said he had never been given a chance until lately, and the police had helped him by giving him money and he had been at work for four months. He hoped his lordship would give him a chance.

His Lordship said he was willing to help prisoner in that way, especially as he was in ill-health and advanced in years, and he should give him three months’ hard labour.
