Special Constables called out again

Hertfordshire Mercury, 23rd January 1915

Transcript

On Tuesday night at about 11 o’clock most of the Special Constables at Cheshunt and Waltham Abbey were called to their respective stations in consequence of the reported movements of hostile aircraft on the east coast.  After being kept at the station until after midnight messages were received regarding the aircraft, and as a result the men were dismissed.  There are people in the district who ask what good the Special Constables would be in the event of an aerial attack locally.  It is in police orders that the ‘Specials’ would be required to assist the regular police in the keeping of order in the streets, and in a variety of other ways.
