'I only done it for a bit of fun'

Bogus Special Constable

Transcript

On Thursday 1st June 1916, a Captain of the 6th Essex Royal Defence Corps in Bishop’s Stortford complained that at about half past ten at night he was riding his bicycle on the London Road, near the Three Tuns pub, when a man called to him to put his bicycle light out.

As he’d been told previously to do this at about the same time and the same place the Captain got off his bicycle and asked the man if he was a Special Constable and the man replied  ‘Yes’.

The Captain then asked him to show his badge but he ran away and the Captain followed him to a house in Dane Street.

This was entered in the Police log at 5.00 a.m. on the 2nd June 1916 by PC J Davies.

PC J Davies then accompanied the Captain down to Dane Street where he pointed out the house where the man had entered.  When asked why he told the Captain to put his light out the man replied ‘I only done it for fun.  I didn’t think there was any harm in it’.
