Bakers as Special Constables

Hertfordshire Mercury, 26th June 1915

Transcript

At Much Hadham Petty Sessions on Saturday, before Messrs F.H. Norman (Chairman), and C. Fitzroy Doll, there were no cases on the charge sheet.  The only business was the swearing-in of the following five Special Constables : Messrs J. Stracey and W. Topcott, of Much Hadham, and Messrs J. Houghton, H.J. Bridge, and Walter White, of Little Hadham.  All were bakers, and should a state of emergency arise and fugitives were fleeing across the country they could remain at their shops in order to supply bread.  The Chairman said the Bench were much obliged to them, and hoped they would have nothing to do.
