Was he a spy ?

Unknown person seen loitering near Hallingbury Road

By Elaine B

On the 25th April 1915, Albert Patrick of the Liberal Club, Bishop’s Stortford, reported that about 5.30 p.m. whilst walking along the Hallingbury Road, near Garden Fields, he saw a man loitering, looking towards the railway line. By the manner of his actions, Mr Patrick thought that he was spying. This man then disappeared without a trace. He suspected that he went across the field to the railway line. Description given as aged about 25-30 years, height 5ft 9in to 5ft 10in, wearing a dark brown suit and cap, and of rather dark appearance. The on-duty P.C. made enquiries and was of the opinion that the man was not a spy, but merely watching the trains passing over the Black Bridge.
