Hertfordshire Mercury, 15th June 1918
At Hitchin Sessions on the Tuesday, Phoebe Rowley (21), of Broughton Hill, Letchworth, was fined 30 shillings for riding a bicycle without a front or rear light at 11:25pm.
Miss Rowley had stated in evidence that she had been returning from a dance. She told the Bench that she saw two figures and, as she did not like passing them, she jumped on her bicycle. She did not know they were policemen.
Police Sergeant Dean said that, when he had stopped the defendant, she had run away.
