At Hertford County Sessions Harry Cooledge, Stephen Matthews, and Thomas Taylor, all of Essendon, and William Francis and Joseph Francis, of Howe Green, Little Berkhamstead, were summoned for gaming with cards at Essendon, on July 11. The case had been adjourned to enable the defendants to join the Army. Supt Pear said that all the young men had enlisted except Joseph Francis, who had been rejected as he was under height. The Bench directed that no penalty should be imposed.
