A prisoner enlists

Hertfordshire Mercury, 26th June 1915

Transcript

At Hertfordshire Assizes Frederick Miles (27), labourer, was charged with unlawfully wounding PCs Gooch and Lee, at Standon, on September 18.  He pleaded guilty.  Mr Blanco White prosecuted, and Mr Hansell defended.

Mr Hansell said the prisoner had some small convictions against him, but he was willing to go into the Army at once if it was possible for his Lordship to allow that course.  He had been in prison since 23 February.

His Lordship bound the prisoner over to come up for judgement if called upon, and said he hoped the prisoner would employ his gifts in wounding those who ought to be wounded.
