A begging tramp

Transcript

A tramp called Hartley, of Chippenham, Cambs, was charged with begging at houses in High Street, Much Hadham, on the 27th ult.

P.S. Jaquest saw the defendant go to several of the principal residents’ houses, ring the bell and ask for coppers. When arrested he used disgraceful language, was very violent, and had a pair of scissors in his left hand, which were taken from him with difficulty.

On him was found 4 pence.

He was sentenced to 14 days’ hard labour.
