Throw some light on the case !

Hertfordshire Mercury, 26th February 1916

Transcript

Horace Webb of Bull Plain, Hertford, was summoned for a breach of the Lights on Vehicles order.  He did not answer the summons and thus did not appear, but he did send his wife !  She produced to the Court a letter that he had prepared beforehand explaining the circumstances of the matter before the Court.

Sgt Palmer said that on the night of 14th Feb he had seen the defendant with a horse and cart, in Castle Street, without a rear light.  The defendant had affirmed in the letter, however, that the lamp had been alight when he had been in Horns Mill.

The Bench found the case proved and fined the defendant 4 shillings.
