Sleeping on a wagon

Hertfordshire Mercury, 28th March 1914

Transcript

At Hertford Borough Sessions, William Francis, of Chapmore End, was summoned for riding, asleep, in St Andrew Street on the night of 18th March whilst in charge of a waggon and two horses.

Police Constable McFarlane stated that he was on duty controlling the traffic as the road was up and that, if he had not stopped the horses, they would have gone straight into the trench.

Samuel Mansfield, a nightwatchman, corroborated.  The defendant was fined 10s.
