An obliging constable

Hertfordshire Mercury, 11th December 1915

Transcript

At Ware Petty Sessions on Tuesday, William Gunn, a hay carter, of Hunsdon, was summoned for a breach of the Lights on Vehicles Act.  P.c. Field said that on November 26 at 2.10 a.m., he was at St Margarets, when a wagon approached him with two horses attached.  The witness stopped them and the defendant expressed surprise that his lamps were out when the witness drew his attention to the fact.  The defendant had not got any candles, and the witness went home and got him one, as he had three miles more to go.  Supt Handley said that the defendant had not been summoned at that Bench before, but on an average he was summoned once a month in the Metropolitan district.  Fined 6 shillings.
