Transcript

Alfred Winters, of Brooke Cottage, High Street, Cheshunt, did not appear in answer to a charge of riding asleep in Ware on April 27th.

P.C. Frogley stated that at 11 p.m. on April 27th he saw a horse and cart coming down the High Street. Noticing that the horse was going all over the street, he shouted but could get no reply, and he could not see anyone in charge. He found the driver asleep covered over with sacks, and the reins were tied to a truss of hay. In reply to witness’s question to whether he was asleep, defendant replied ”Yes, ‘guv’nor; it’s a fair cop”. Defendant was fined 1s. and 4s. costs.
